The Legend of Sina and the Eel
Long, long agoIn the ancient island of Savai'iLived a girl named SinaShe befriended an eelAnd every evening under the moonlightThey would swim and talkHe told Sina of how he once was a princeHe grew larger and more demanding of Sina's loveIn time this frightened SinaAnd she escaped by running to relatives in a nearby villageDespite these attempts to get away from the eelHe would follow herAnd often appear in waters wherever Sina wentShe told her uncle and cousin of her fear of the eelAnd soon her cousin was sent to confront the eelIn a battle the eel's head was severedAnd in his final breathHe asked Sina to bury his headAnd that one day, as a reminder of his loveHis head would sprout a treeThat would bear fruit with a refreshing nectarThe eel's face would be on the fruit: two eyes and a mouthSo that each time Sina would drink from the fruitShe would be, in fact, kissing him.
