Mother Earth (reflection)
I was walking along the beachone winter day. Looking down,I saw a wave push a feather up onthe sand. It was a sea gull featherstained with oil. I picked it up andfelt the dark slick film on my fingers.I couldn't help wondering if the birdhad survived. Was it all right outthere? ...I knew it wasn't.
I felt sad to think how carlesslywe treat our home. The earth weall share is not just a rock tossedthrough space but a living, nurturing being.
She cares for us; she deserves ourcare in return. We've been treatingMother Earth the way some peopletreat a rental apartment. Just trashit and move on.
But there's no place to move onnow. We have bought our garbageand our wars and our racism to everypart of the world.
We must begin to clean her up,and that means cleaning up our ownhearts and minds first, because theylead us to poison our dear plant.
The sooner we change, the easier itwill be to feel our love for MotherEarth and the love she so freelygives back to us.
